I am having knee surgery in 18 days, barring illness. (Sick people, stay away! I do not want to have to reschedule surgery.) This gives me a rather horrible hollow feeling in the pit of my stomach when I think about it, which I try not to. After surgery, I'll be going through physical rehabilitation for about nine months before I can do much of anything. I'll be on crutches for a while, and then with a cane and knee brace, and so on. There's a lot of stuff I just won't be able to do. I'm trying to think of what I should do while I still can. This is hindered by the fact that I can't do anything crazy like go hiking, or even to the zoo--the biggest problem that I'm still having with my knee is that it tweaks out and swells up pretty easily, and the less swelling pre-surgery, the better the recovery. So I can't do anything that involves a lot of walking or strenuous knee-involving physical activity.

If you were going to pretty much lose the easy use of your legs in 18 days, what would you do?

I'm still thinking on my list. Free things that I can stop doing if it bothers my knee are under consideration.
* Go out to eat, someplace interesting
* Visit the MIA.
* Use a library pass to visit one of the other places it gets free tix to (Mill City Museum?).
* Meander through one of the Asian grocery stores.
* Walk along the Mississippi River (dubious).
* Go to the Mall of America (dubious).
* Go to IKEA (somewhat dubious, but it's sort of a cultural experience--certainly couldn't do both of the above).

And no, I can't throw a pre-surgery party, because I know that all the sick people would come, and that would be bad.

Of course, the day before surgery I get to go and browse through the grocery store and pick up all manner of random weird and interesting foods. I don't usually go into grocery stores, so I tend to go a little crazy when I do, and it's a treat.

Of course, if I keep working seven days a week, I might not be able to do any of these things.

Ever been to the Minnesota Center for Photography? They have classes and ongoing exhibitions. Granted, they're way the hell up by the St. Anthony area if they're still where they were when I was still in the area. My exhibit-fu's out of date.

Midtown Market's always a vote, too. Winter Carnival's coming. S'all I got.

Ha! Friend of mine manages MNCP and yet I've never been there.

Been to Midtown recently, at least.

Oooh, Winter Carnival....

Art galleries and such are good ideas.

IKEA and MOA both have wheelchairs for folks what need 'em. I know - when I had the hernia repair, I did IKEA in a wheelchair that I drove MYSELF. I'M A BIG BOY NOW!

Also, I will take you to IKEA some weekend if you want. It's a cultural experience!

Just popped in to make the wheelchair comment.

But I hate wheelchairs!

Art is good.

I feel like wheelchairs are giving in...some part of me just snarls at the mere thought of using one. Crutches are bad enough. Let me put it this way--after the initial injury, I probably should have been on crutches.

Nope. Just a cane and an ace bandage for me.

A purely practical answer

I'd rent a car. Driving stick would be unfun.

"Fortunately", I don't drive, so that's not a problem. I don't think non-stick would save you, though--using any pedals at all would be unfun.

I'd learn shit. Seriously, there's a lot of learning I want to do. Personally, I have things like programming, web design, linux, and other languages on my list. One of those may apply to you, but I'm sure there are other things you've wanted to figure out how to do which don't involve walking.
There's actually a part of me that is jealous because it would be nice to have some time in which I couldn't do other things so I would be forced to take the time to learn the things I've been planning.

Well, I was thinking before the surgery. I have a long list of things that need doing/learning that I can work on once I'm incapacitated, starting with writing, editing Vicesteed, getting better at Spanish, working double-plus-hard on my memorizing belt material through half-black, organizing all my photo stuff and submitting it to stock photography places, making a photo book or two, um...etc.

I don't think I'll have enough recovery time to do everything.

See Frieda Khalo at the Walker

If you haven't. Closes on the 20th, and I think Thursday nights they are open late and free if you want. Plus, its not a huge exhibit, so seeing it probably wouldn't over-exert you.

Good idea, and I tried! Tried checking out passes, but the library ones are all out. I may try to persuade Phil to head thataway on Thursday.

The sick people thing. I totally get that! And though there's no scientific evidence to back up my claim, Airborn totally works. I think it's the huge shot of Vitamin C.

I felt really bad because we hosted a New Years Party this year, and 24 hours before the party was to commence, Adam and I came down with a terrible cold. We thought about canceling, but it seemed far too late to do so!

I'm usually paranoid about sick people--being sick having the power to postpone my surgery has made me really, really paranoid. I'm using Emergen-C right now to hopefully shorten the cold.

I'm kind of weird, but I'd probably cook & freeze a lot since cooking generally requires standing, and do any cleaning that I needed to do.

other than that, borrow plenty of books & dvds and get ready to be bored.

Oh, well, practical stuff.... ;)

Yeah. Cleaning's on the list. Cooking not so much, since Phil will be taking over there, and presumably buying me many frozen dinners.

I've found high-strength painkillers work pretty well against boredom, too.
