It's raining outside, and I am giddy with delight, despite the fact that in not too long I'll have to venture out into it. My portent sensitivity has been tuned to high, and I'm lookin' for signs of spring. A green bud. A drizzle of icy rain. I still haven't seen the first short skirt of spring, though. After a winter that seemed to last for far too long*, I can hardly wait for true spring.

What signs of spring do you look for? What have you found?

*I maintain, however, that I only got the antsy winter cabin fever/depression because all the popular kids were doing it.

Yeah, but I didn't *see* it, so it doesn't count. Unless, of course, you take pictures of yourself standing outside in it and send them to me.

I wait for signs of summer and then realize I've missed it. That's what it's like in this state.

The mosquitos don't tip you off?

Mosquitos == summer, since they can't survive very well in the random cold snaps of the spring. I guess what I'm trying to say is that spring is over (or erased) so quickly that there's no point trying to pin-point it, since summer is the only season that will be "here to stay" in this state. Spring fades back into winter WITHIN HOURS - HOURS - it is as unreliable as it is fickle, like a platonic Valley Girl.

Summer? Really? Summer has always made its presence quite well known to me.

Spring and fall are the fleeting seasons.

Let me rephrase:

You said: What signs of spring do you look for? What have you found?

I said: I wait for signs of summer and then realize I've missed it [by which I mean SPRING]. That's what it's like in this state.

'Zat makes much more sense.

This year, at least, you've gotten your reminder to look for spring before summer.

I saw a cardinal today! And it rained. It it wasn't so windy and cold (and I had work), I would have savored it more.

I wore a skirt, but it wasn't short.

Are cardinals a spring thing? I thought they stuck around during winter, too. If nothing else, all the Christmas cards with white snow and a red cardinal seem to indicate as much.

I honestly have forgotten if it's blue jays or cardinals that are the spring portent. But I had to mention it for the sheer rarity of the sighting.

There is an undeniable scent to each season. I'll know it's Spring when I smell it.

Wow. You just made me try to figure out the distinctive scents of each season. Much fun.

Except that we live in the city, and so spring sometimes has a rotting scent as everything thaws.

I'd say the 62 degree weather here is a pretty big sign.
