There was a program that went along with my version of Photoshop, that will let you transform layered psd docs into animated gifs. That's how I do that. Get that creepy shit off your post. That's creepy. Did y'all get my message that I'm gonna be late to game?
Animated gif files - depending on which visual-arts-editing software you use, it can be easy or hard to make them. Lots of transparencies, layers, and such-like-whatnot. Go to digitalblasphemy (http://www.digitalblasphemy.com) and save the animated swirling fire as an image. Or gunn's userpic. Open it up and see what the layers look like.
I guarantee that you will be surprised.
Most Lj-people I know don't use gif's because of patent problems. But that's a whole nother issue.
